XFlow Energy: Low-cost wind power through vertical-axis turbines

About Us

XFlow Energy develops technologies to reduce the cost of renewable energy. We design and manufacture our own wind turbines and supply other OEMs with products and services to reduce the cost of their products.

XFlow’s flagship product is our 25 kW vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) which is being designed to reduce the cost of wind energy generation. XFlow Energy’s unique rotor design eliminates the structural failure modes common to VAWTs while simultaneously maintaining high efficiency and low manufacturing costs.

XFlow is also producing and licensing technologies to OEMs developing renewable energy products. This includes our patented power conversion system and controller.

Additionally, XFlow offers engineering consulting, prototyping, wind tunnel testing, and field testing services for renewable energy systems.

Team

Ian Brownstein, PhD

Co-founder, CEO

Ian received his PhD from Stanford University and has over a decade of experience working on wind-energy-related projects. Most recently, Ian worked with Dr. John Dabiri to study VAWT arrays in the field for five years at the Field Laboratory for Optimized Wind Energy. While his doctoral work focused on turbine interactions, his field work has provided extensive experience in vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) design, construction, installation, and maintenance. His primary fields of expertise are aerodynamics and wind energy farm design.

Ben Strom, PhD

Co-founder, CTO

Ben received his PhD from the University of Washington, working with Dr. Brian Polagye and Dr. Steve Brunton, and has over a decade of experience designing and testing flow energy related projects. Before his PhD, Ben was a research engineer on the Leading Edge oscillating foil energy harvesting project at Brown University. His primary fields of expertise are aerodynamics, machine design, structural mechanics, control systems, composites, and manufacturing processes.

Jason Mavis

Lead Electrical Engineer

Jason received his BSEE from Ohio Northern University. He has 7 years experience designing, testing, and deploying electro-mechanical systems. His primary fields of expertise are electrical system design and product development.

Grace Lovelace

Lead Software Engineer

Grace received her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. She has seven years of software engineering experience developing, deploying, testing, and documenting high-performance distributed systems. She specializes in technical communication, software architecture and system design.
